dc.description.abstractDenne oppgaven er en analyse av den jamaicanske spillefilmen The Harder They Come (1972). Den tar opp begrepet kulturell identitet og knytter det til utviklingen av den jamaikanske kulturen, med vekt på tiden etter frigjøringen fra Storbritania i 1962. Den ser spesielt på begrepet Kreol og på kreoliseringsprosessen på Jamaica. På samme måte som den Jamaicanske identiteten er kreolsk, argumenterer jeg for at The Harder They Come kan kalles en kreolsk film, fordi den knytter seg opp til forskjellige (vestlige) fortellertradisjoner, samtidig som den uttrykker noe spesifikt jamaicansk. Oppgaven belyser dessuten teorier utviklet med henblikk på film i den Tredje Verden, og forsøker å plassere The Harder They Come innen disse tradisjonene. Et overordnet tema er at kulturell identitet må forstås utifra en nasjonal kontekst.nor
dc.description.abstractThis thesis is an analysis of the Jamaican film The Harder They Come (1972). It discusses the concept of cultural identity as it has been approached and discussed at different levels of Jamaican society, mainly in relation to the years following independence from Britain in 1962. It focuses more specifically on the concept of Creole culture and the creolisation process in Jamaican society. The thesis argues that like Jamaican Creole identity, The Harder They Come can be called a Creole film. This is because the film draws on a variety of narrative traditions, whilst simultaneously expressing something uniquely Jamaican. The thesis aims at placing the film whithin its wider socio-cultural context, and in this respect it attempts to relate the ideology of the filmic text to the social structures of the tie in which it was produced. It also draws attention to Third World film theory and practice in general, and attempts to place The Harder They Come within these traditions. The overriding theme, however, is the argument that the concept of cultural identity must be understood within nationally specific context. The thesis explores, through an analysis of The Harder They Come, the various influences on Jamaican culture and in turn its collective identities.eng
