Abstract
This master’s thesis examines the communication practices of two Norwegian-Russian cultural events. I have chosen to explore the following cases: the Barents Spektakel festival by Pikene på broen and the National Gallery’s exhibition “Sacred Treasures from the Moscow Kremlin Museums”. Through qualitative interviews and document analysis I’ve examined how the organizers communicate their events, and have looked at whether these artistic arrangements can be considered as contributing to the cultural policy cooperation between Norway and Russia. I have then interpreted the material from various theoretical perspectives, focusing on goal development, target groups, information materials used, relationship to the press, as well as editorial coverage of the events themselves. My subsequent analysis shows that the organizers adopt contrasting strategies in the planning and communication of these two events. Despite the fact that the cultural cooperation takes different forms, my results demonstrate that these events give new impulses to bilateral cooperation and they hold the potential to contribute to the development and the strengthening of trust between the Norwegian and Russian peoples.
