Abstract
Hva kan man peke på som særegent i Brad Mehldaus pianospill gjennom en studie av innspillingene "Still Crazy After All These Years" og "Knives out"?
Brad Mehldau (born 1970) is arguably one of the great contemporary jazz pianists, and he has been successful in both his homeland and internationally. He has worked with well-known artists, including Pat Metheny, Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Charlie Haden, Lee Konitz, etc. In his own trio, with Larry Grenadier on bass and drummer Jeff Ballard, Mehldau plays a mix of jazz standards, his own compositions and pop-songs in his own arrangements. This master thesis is focused on two recordings, and through analysis of selected musical parameters I try to examine what is characteristic in Brad Mehldaus playing. The thesis question is as follows:
What can you point out as characteristic in Brad Mehldaus piano-playing through a study of the recordings "Still Crazy After All These Years" and "Knives out"?
As a basis for this master thesis I have transcribed the full piano part in each recording. In the analysis I mainly focus on:
-Chords. I here examine closer which lefthand-voicings Mehldau uses and how he constructs chords with both hands.
-Voice-leading and extensive use of the left hand. I here focus on a horisontal approach, an extensive use of the left hand, and contrapuntal elements.
-Improvisation. Here, I examine closer which scales Mehldau uses during his improvisations, superimposition, motivic improvisation, and melodic structures.
-Rhytmical elements such as subdivision, syncopation, elastic manipulation, and frasing.
