This assignment concerns the Norwegian director Margreth Olin´s dogumentary Ungdommens Råskap. The movie was shot during springtime 2004 at a junior high school in Oslo with great cultural diversity among the pupils. Through the framework of history of ideas, I have analysed the concept of Norwegian national identity, focusing on the specific expression the national identity has in a dialogical relationship between different cultures as they expresses themselves through the participants in the film. With basis in this notion, I discuss the challenges the Norwegian national identity faces in the age of globalisation.
I analyse four excerpts from the film that deals with aspects concerning national identity and its expressions in the Norwegian everyday school life, and place Olin in a critical tradition.
In a historical perspective, the idea of integration is relatively new in Norway, and it still seems to search for its practical realisation in society today. In this assignment I examine this confusion and how it affects the relationship between the majority and the minority cultures, as expressed in Margreth Olin´s film.
