Abstract
This thesis examines the cognitive challenges of climate change adaptation, and the potential for geographical information systems (GIS) to address these in order to enable successful awareness raising and decision making at the local level. Critical GIS theory and a variety of psychological and cognitive models provide the theoretical starting points, while the empirical findings come from a case study of Fredrikstad municipality in Norway.
