This thesis is done in co-operation with GasSecure AS and concerns detection and prevention of dew in the context of wireless and optical gas detection. Optical surfaces in a wireless detector can not be heated continously with the same energy consumption like the wired detectors of todays technology. A measuring system with two methods of dew point detection has been developed, including one solution for the required heating of optical surfaces, where the energy consumption has been measured. The dew point temperature is measured with one indirect and one direct method and the methods shows similar results in the region of 20 °C. At lower dew point temperatures the results, with the uncertainty included, differ some between the methods. The measuring system is implemented on a model of a gas detector which is placed in a test chamber. The test chamber is developed through this thesis to provoke dew at the optical surfaces. The energy consumption has been measured in a rough environment with relative humidity in the range of 90-95 %RH, with a temperature difference of 0-6 °C between the air and the detector. The results show that the energy consumption to prevent dew at stable conditions with a temperature difference at 6 °C is significant reduced compared to the methods of today with continously heated optical surfaces. With lower temperature differences between air and the detector, and the possibility to turn off heating when it is not needed, the results show that the energy consumption is even lower.eng
