Abstract
This thesis explores how international law on the use of force applies to state activities in outer space, by examining three research questions. The first question is how the general prohibition of the use of force between states stipulated in the UN Charter article 2(4) applies to outer space. The second question is whether there is a right to self-defense in space, and if so, what would constitute an “armed attack” in space, and which measures can be lawfully taken in response? The final question relates to the adequacy of existing international law on the use of force in outer space.
